It Clicks and Won't Be Recognised

A drive that has started clicking and is no longer recognised has a head fault — the click is the read/write heads failing to read and resetting to try again, and until they read, the drive cannot present itself, so the computer does not recognise it — reached by replacing the heads in clean air over platters the fault usually spares. The clicking is the signature: the heads cannot settle, and each further attempt to run the drive risks the platters they rest on, so it is opened rather than powered.
