The storage decides it. MacBooks up to 2012 use standard 2.5-inch SATA drives — classic Mac hard drive recovery territory; 2013–2017 models carry Apple's slide-out blade SSDs — both types unplug, both fit our native adapters, both are routine recoveries. From 2018, T2 and then Apple Silicon soldered the SSD to the board and wrapped it in hardware encryption, and that data cannot be lifted from a failed board by anyone; we stepped away from those attempts two years ago because the win rate didn't justify the invoice. Liquid goes straight for the logic board, and the logic board takes the hit so the storage usually doesn't. On removable-storage machines the drive or blade almost always images perfectly once it's out and treated. What genuinely loses spill cases is optimism: plugging in the charger 'to test it', a week in a rice bag, a warm airing cupboard. Power off, unplug, move fast — that sequence saves files.
