No logo crosses the bench more often. DM-generation Barracudas — the ST2000DM008 especially, and the infamous head-eating ST3000DM001 — present two signature states: firmware seizures where a mechanically sound drive hangs at 'busy' or reports zero capacity, resolved through the diagnostic terminal without the lid ever lifting; and post-knock clicking, which sends the drive to the clean bench for donor heads before imaging. Both are standard weekly work with strong results, and the shingled ST500LM030 laptop drives add a third habit — crawling so badly they get mistaken for dead.
Deskstar and Travelstar drives have answered to three masters — IBM, then Hitachi from 2003, then HGST inside Western Digital — and every era still climbs out of Wiltshire lofts and office clear-outs. Their trademark decline is a head stack tiring unevenly: one surface starts erroring first, reads slow, and in the end the drive ticks rather than mounts. Imaging goes surface by surface — whatever the strong heads reach is banked before a donor stack takes over for the remainder — the HTS725050A7E630 Travelstar being the patient we know best.
Before the 2003 handover to Hitachi, Deskstar and Travelstar were IBM lines, and their IDE-era survivors keep appearing from retired towers and boxed-up laptops, carrying the only remaining copy of old accounts and photographs. Two decades of storage seizes spindles, stiffens lubricant and bonds heads to platters, so these units visit the flow bench for inspection before power is ever applied. PATA adapters and period donors live on the legacy shelf — an IBM badge alone never condemns the data.

Still bolted inside a PC, laptop or server? The drive has to come out before anything is posted — this lab works on bare drives only, and extraction isn't a service we run. On most machines it's a handful of screws, and any Swindon repair shop will do it for small change. The one hard boundary: storage soldered onto a motherboard is out of scope.
