Seagate's slim portables answer knocks with clicking, and the old Iomega eGo and GDHDU units that keep surfacing from drawers strip down to ordinary mechanisms our donors already cover.
Nobody answers the phone at Iomega any more — the brand passed through EMC and Lenovo and then simply stopped — yet its hard drives keep arriving here: eGo portables in their bright shells, GDHDU-series desktop units, Home Media boxes that spent a decade as the family archive. Orphaned doesn't mean unrecoverable. Crack the branded case open and an ordinary Samsung, Seagate or WD mechanism sits inside, which our donor shelf already covers, so an Iomega hard drive follows the same imaging route as anything bought last month. Bring the whole unit if the case defeats you; opening legacy enclosures without harm is part of the job.
LaCie built drives for people who move — Rugged portables riding between shoots, d2 desktops parked under edit bays, Porsche Design units on studio shelves — and movement is precisely what retires them. A Rugged set down hard while spinning loses its heads regardless of the orange armour, while the desktop ranges tend to lose their Thunderbolt or USB-C interface electronics long before the disk behind gives out. With the brand absorbed into Seagate, no factory route remains, so the path home runs through a lab: shell opened, bare disk imaged, donor heads fitted first where the fall demands, projects returned from the image.
A My Passport is best understood as one sealed instrument: the USB socket is mounted directly on the controller PCB of the drive itself, with hardware encryption running in the same silicon, so dead electronics leave your files locked in place, and a hopeful transplant into a spare caddy displays noise instead of names. This bench keeps donor boards covering WDBYVG- and WDBPKJ-generation Passports and moves the cipher chain across intact — the difference between a Passport that stays 'undetected' and one that mounts. The mains-powered My Books fail differently, usually via their bricks and bridges, around a drive in perfect health.
MiniStation portables — HD-PCF models most of all — collect the standard 2.5-inch injuries: falls, worked-loose micro-USB sockets, bad sectors advancing month by month. The DriveStation desktops more often outlast their own power supplies and interface boards than their disks. Several MiniStation variants encrypt in hardware; supplied with your password, that layer is opened during recovery so the returned files read as files. Whichever model lands, the sequence holds: shell off, complete sector image, then a standard drive recovery from the copy.
