The Storage Is Soldered In

A Surface Pro that boots and loads but can no longer be controlled has an input fault, not a data fault — the touchpad, mouse, and touchscreen are how it is operated, not where anything is stored, so their failing leaves the machine running and the data intact. That it still boots shows the storage is sound; the question that decides everything else is how that storage can be reached. An input fault is not a data fault. That the touchpad, mouse, and touchscreen have stopped working, while the machine still boots and loads, points at an input fault, not a data one — those are the ways the Surface is controlled, not where anything is kept, so when they fail the machine still runs and its storage is unaffected, only the means of operating it is gone. So the fault is in the input, not the data: he cannot control the Surface, which is why it seems unusable, rather than the files being lost. His data is intact on the storage, behind the failed input. An input fault is not a data fault.
